Swedish massage is the most commonly used
method in the United States. It uses a system of long gliding strokes, massage percussion, and tapping techniques on the muscles.Swedish
massage uses five basic stroke techniques: effleurage, petrissage, tapotement,
friction and vibration.
Effleurage
Effleurage consists of long gliding strokes
that sweep across the muscles. The strokes can be administered using an open
hand or a fist. The masseuse alternates pressure
between firm and light. Massage therapists use these strokes to apply lotion,
assess the condition of the body's muscles, stretch the muscles,
break knotsl release tension, and foster relaxation.
Petrissage
Petrissage uses kneading, rolling, and
lifting strokes to achieve deeper massage penetration of
the muscles. The therapist uses thumbs and knuckles to
knead and squeeze. These strokes relieve knots in the muscles, stimulate
nerves, increase circulation, and promote healing. It also prepares the body
for the next stages of Swedish massage.
Tapotement
(Rhythmic Tapping)
As the name states, rhythmic tapping is applied using fists, the sides of the
hands, and cupped hands to loosen and relax muscles as well as energize them.
These are percussion strokes that stimulate the nerves and muscles as well as
increase circulation. Tapotement strokes are often used to indicate to the
client to change from a face-up position to a face down one.
Friction
Friction is a technique using a warming stroke to create heat rapidly, relaxing the muscles
and preps them for deeper work. By rubbing the palms of the hands together
rapidly, the therapist then applies the hands to the body and works in essential oils. The therapist's hands may
also be rubbed onto the skin of the client to generate heat by friction. This
technique also warms up the muscles for deeper massage treatments.
Vibration
Vibration helps loosen the muscles by using a
rocking action of the fingertips or the heel of the hand over the skin. The
technique literally shakes the muscles to loosen and relax them; the the surrounding vibrations target tissues and create a release of
tension in the muscle being treated.
